Last night, four motions regarding a leadership race were presented to Council. All have their own uniqueness but it really comes down to two specific topics… should the term for Leader be changed and when should the Green Party hold it’s next leadership race. Pretty heavy topics and the Council voted to defer it to the next meeting.

The Greens are coming out of the closet for this falls municipal election in Toronto. There are four Wards with great potential for the Green Party, and I will lay money on a win in Kyle Rae's ward for Chris Tindal, and some respectable showings in three other Wards. It's still early days, and you never know which EDA's are going to cut a deal with which local politicians, but this will be a w ...

After reading through the leadership race motions I get a feeling that we may be on the right track. Three of the four motions transition us from a fixed leadership term to a variable term. There is a question about the threshold of support the leader must achieve to avoid a contest. Steve Kisby suggests 50% where Richard Tyssen suggests 60% and Rob does not specify. Personally I think 50% is ...

Whooee! Well, friends an' foes, there's an old saying that the first casualty of war is the truth. Sadly, that adage is proving to be accurate with regard to the Canadian Forces' release of information on casualties in the Afghanistan conflict. The Hill Times is reporting this morning that the number of returning troops on disability is up to ten times higher than what has been reported by the ...

This is big news in a world where the average temperature is set to keep rising. Mosquitoes are among the most deadly animals in the world, and the best drug we have is about to become a placebo. Way to go, profiteering drug companies!

Faced with a number of conflicting and contradictory motions at tonight's Federal Council meeting regarding the current leadership contest matter, Council opted to defer making a decision, but set a firm date to resolve this matter. Citing a lack of consultation with the Membership, and receipt of some of the motions only the day before, those in favour of deferral nevertheless voiced their de ...

Why doesn't the government issue mortgages? Why do we have this system where private banks collect mortgage interest, while the significant risks are shouldered by the government? If we the public are holding the risks, shouldn't we also collect the profits? Excerpt from Globe and Mail article:The bankers' effort is all the more notable given the unique structure of the Canadian mortgage busin ...

Arguably the biggest issue in politics right now is the Prorogation of Parliament. Since this supposed mistake, Harper has plummeted in the polls, and protests were organized where it was safe to say that far more than just the "chattering classes" showed up. Even usual Conservative allies from the National Post and the Globe have come down on Harper for what they see as a heavy-handed, short- ...

The trend internationally to reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHG’s) is through the Cap and Trade approach. Before this method can take effect, the amount of GHG’s that every enterprise will be allowed to emit will have to be determined. This will require enormous amounts money, people, and time. Inevitably there will be a lot of dispute as to these assessments, which will lead to more money, peopl ...

I would like to thank the organizers of this rally for the opportunity to speak. It is encouraging to see how many people have come out to support this protest. This is an important activity in a democracy for citizens to speak to government between elections. Recent poles suggest many Canadians are as upset by prorogation as we are.

The Ottawa “group of four” greens sponsored a panel discussion on Afghanistan and Canada. During the question period an Afghani told a story of his relatives in which a young man, within a day of being married, was taking two children to the market for some shopping. They failed to understand an order to stop and all were shot dead by Canadian soldiers. Rather than a marriage, there were th ...

Go Australia! Stand up to the IOC bullies! It’s too bad the Canadians already folded, when we were holding most of the cards. We are hosting the 2010 games after all, we could tell the IOC to stick it, if it weren’t for limp-wristed Canadians like Dick Pound.
From 1996, this telling quote from Dick Pound:

There is some conversation over at Dave’s and Matthew’s blogs about the Green Party and the Revenue Sharing Agreement the party has with it’s EDA and it’s former Provincial Divisions. There are some pretty heavy debates going on…. Should it be changed? Shouldn’t it? What would a new RSA look like? etc. etc.

The Green Party of Canada's finances are in a big mess. The current leadership is not able to manage the money, and so they're broke. They don't have much history with the Party, so I guess it's understandable that thhey would try to balance the books by breaking the Revenue Sharing agreement that was so laboriously crafted 5 years ago, but they will be broken by the Party if they try it.
